This aluminum shim was found on all 1956-1962 cars, but can also be put on 1953-1955 cars. The addition of the tapered shim increases the front wheel caster. The thickest part of the shim goes toward the rear of the car.

To tilt the top of the suspension cross member rearward, increasing the nominal positive caster angle and providing more range of positive caster adjustment, a tapered aluminum shim was added between the bottom of the frame and the top of the cross member. This improved high-speed, straight-ahead tracking and steering returnability at all speeds, and entered production at approximately 1956 VIN#4000 along with a modified steering third arm support bracket.

This tapered shim is installed between the bottom of the frame and the suspension cradle. The thick end goes towards the rear of the car and the long edge with the curve goes outboard toward the tire. The same shim is used for left or right, just flipped.
